Giriraj Swami read and spoke from Srimad-Bhagavatam 2.4.15 at a home program in Moorpark, California.

“Srila Rupa Gosvami, quoting the Padma Purana, explains that there are different phases in sinful activity. It is a chain. One stage is bija, the seed of the sin, which is the idea of committing the sinful act, or, one could say, the desire. Even more subtle than bija is kuta, or the predisposition towards sin even before it is manifest as a thought or desire. Then actually engaging in a sinful act brings further reactions. One reaction is suffering. We are punished by the laws of nature. Another is that we become inclined to engage in more sinful acts. So it is a cycle. But devotional service is so powerful that it can eradicate sin in all these different phases — kuta, bija aparabdha, and prarabdha — as mentioned in this verse from Srimad-Bhagavatam.  Then we become free and happy. As Srila Prabhupada said, ‘Suffering comes from sin, and sin comes from ignorance.’ Therefore the gift of knowledge — transcendental knowledge — is the greatest gift.”
